Thomas asks…

TMJ….Braces or surgery?

I have pretty bad TMJ that causes me A LOT of pain! i’ve actually been to the oral surgeon and did the splint treatment (which actually made my pain worse) and the next step was them scheduling my surgery….but now my insurance doesn’t want to pay for them…

My insurance also does not cover braces (what the hell am i paying them 30 bucks a week for i dont know) but the ortho does work out payment plans which NO oral surgeon in this area would and i just moved and can’t open up anymore credit and they want 5 thousand up front!…

Does braces actually help with TMJ pain…i have a pretty significant crossbite and i know it will help with that…but i don’t want to waste 5 thousand dollars that i’ll be paying 200 bucks a month for if it’s not going to help with the pain…

anybody dealt with this issue before or anybody ever had braces to fix tmj? i just need some opinions!!!!

Thanks =]
i did wear a mouth guard for 3 weeks (doctors orders) and it made my pain worse! it actually made it shift from all the pain being on the left to making the right hurt as well!!!…

the doctor examined the guard and said that i do not have a clenching/grinding problem…

Bruxism Treatment Guy answers:

Surgery would probably be cheaper than braces if insurance doesn’t cover it. Think about it, after braces, you’ll probably have to have a retainer, which will cost more money.
